By technical definition the Nazi V2 rocket was the first man made object to reach space. According to the NASA definition of what is space and what is Earth, the atmosphere ends at 50Km above sea level, which was reached by the nazi's on the 3rd of October 1942, the V2 rocket used had reached up-to 85-90Km above the Earth. However if you define space by the Karmann line at 100Km, then the Germans breached that line at June of 1944 reaching an altitude of 189Km. Also the very first film of the Earth from space was made after the war by the Americans using a German V2 Rocket.

I'm not sure why anything going on today means that we shouldn't continue to devote time, energy, and resources to important research, growth, and exploration. We're not halting any of that in any other area of research due to what's going on so why would we do it here, of all areas?
